Girls Love Dirt

A few months ago on her family's blog, Texas Mommy had a post entitled "Boys Love Dirt," and while I don't remember too many of the specifics, I do remember seeing lots of pictures of little boys covered from head to toe in dirt :) I remember smiling to myself knowingly; after all, what mother of boys hasn't experienced the clean-up associated with dirt-play? You know what I mean: the dirt under the fingernails, in the hair, in every pocket and buttonhole imaginable, smeared across the face...It's a beautiful sight, indeed :)

What I didn't expect is that my little girl, my sweet little girl that wears pretty little dresses and pink bows, seems to love dirt just as much as her big brother! Actually, Maria loves anything that her big brother does, which I'm pretty sure is universal for little sisters. She also has a very strong will (I'm staying away from the word "stubborn" because that implies that it is a negative quality), which poses its own set of difficulties when, for instance, I am trying to bring her inside for lunchtime. After prying a shovel out of her hands and unsuccessfully trying to dust all of the dirt off of her clothes without getting dirty myself, I am faced with the challenge of lifting and transporting a stiff-as-a-board, red-in-the-face toddler from the dirt-pile into the house. You wouldn't think it from that innocent smile, would you? :)

So, what sorts of fun will you be having with the kids this December afternoon? I hope that it's not too chilly to be outdoors yet in your little corner of the world...

God bless!

ADORABLE, Kat! Bella over here is pretty distraught when she gets dirty, maybe Angelina will be our dirt girl. The only thing cuter than a little boy with a dirt-smeared face is a little girl with a dirt-smeared face! How great for C to have a dirt-loving little sister.

Kat, she is radiant.
Can I just say that I love that siblings have each other? Not profound, but I just want to throw it out there. Despite all the fights and all the "keep him awaaaaay from my ponies" that I experience in a day, the bear-cub-like-play that goes on warms my heart to the max. I hope Maria and C always want to get dirty together.

She'd fit right in here! How adorable!!
To keep things interesting as the weather's turned colder, the boys have been doing a lot of imaginative play lately. I'm sure its in part due to our increasing time spent indoors, but whatever the reason, I'm loving it. One moment I am "Mama Mirabelle", (from PBS) the gigantic elephant mother with her brood of young elephant, cheetah, and zebra. The next I am "Sir Topham Hatt", yelling commands to my bevy of trains... All in a day's fun, huh? :)

AWOL, yes!! I love that siblings have each other too. I hope my husband and I can continue to help foster their pure, beautiful closeness as they get older... it's something I'd be so sad to lose.

My Maria is fine with getting dirty, she mostly likes to cover herself in food. She too is strong willed (maybe it's something in the name?) and I usually use the word "crazy" to describe her but I don't think of it as a negative description, most of the time.

I am so lucky that my son has a baby sister and that they are both going to have another one in May. Since my son is Autistic, we really wondered how another child would affect him (he was diagnosed shortly after Maria was born). She has really been great for him - she doesn't care AT ALL that he wants to be left alone, she is always right up in his grill and although it drives him crazy sometimes, it is forced interaction that will ultimately be wonderful for him. We will see what they both think of the newest one coming in May - Maria will have just had a short time to be the baby, and I can't imagine she's going to take well to it right away, but it should be interesting nonetheless.

Great picture!

Ahh the dirt! We have sandbox, but some how the "dirt box" aka my lovely raised bed that is supposed to have herbs in it, is way more popular. Even though it is cold here we still bundle up and try to pry up chunks of ice cold dirt.

And I love the dance of trying to de-dirt your kid while not getting dirt on your clothes...let me know if you master that!

Love it! Especially since, given our household of boys, I have this idea that girls are all sugar and spice and don't get dirty or hti/throw/wrestle.
