Worst Christmas Songs Ever

We are in full Christmas-prep mode around here. Less than 1 week to go until the great Feast, and since Guadete Sunday we have been listening to non-stop Christmas music. I LOVE Christmas music, and there are plenty of great Christmas songs out there. A good version of O Holy Night literally makes me tear up EVERY time.

But, there are few "Christmas" songs that drive me absolutely bonkers. With the help of Mr. Red, I have made a list of my top 3 worst Christmas songs ever. In the comment boxes, please feel free to add to this list, or make a case as to why one of these songs should not be on my list (maybe there is a 'good' version out there that I am missing?).

1. Santa Baby (this tops my list as the all-time worst Christmas song).
2. Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time (Sorry Paul, but after listening to this we aren't.)
3. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (the version I heard on the radio yesterday actually had smooching noises throughout the song!)

Close runner ups include: Same Old Lang Syne, Christmas Shoes, Domonick the Donkey.

I totally agree! Add to that list a cutie that my kids picked up in religion class, to the tune of "Santa Clause is Coming to Town", you sing "you better watch out, you better not cry...Jesus Christ is coming to town." It somehow manages to be profane and offensive, and horribly embarrassing when sung at top lung by a four year old in a public place.

MA, you are NOT allowed to be posting this soon! Amazing!! :) Red, you know I'm a sucker for anything musical and cheesy, so "Santa Baby" actually makes the cut around here. lol. :) In terms of classic carols, Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song", "Joy to the World", "O Holy Night", and "Sleigh Ride" are all perpetually on my playlist!

The all time fav in our house is the Little Drummer Boy, which we like to play on the piano with the sheet music in the back of the Ezra Jack Keats book.

Also being from NJ we have to give a top prize to Bruce's Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

Can we do top favorite children's xmas books???? Ok, my pick besides the above mentioned Little Drummer Boy
1: The Story of Holly and Ivy by Rumer Godden and Illus. by Barbara Cooney
2: Christmas in the Barn (ok oddly New Englandy nativity) by Margaret Wise Brown Illus. by Barbara Cooney (I have a Barbara Cooney thing).
3: new this year...The Christmas Box by Eve Mirriam and illus. by David Smalll (ok story, funny concept, and reminds me of Alice's family complete with new baby :)

Um these are all either out of print or hard to find so check your local library!

I've never been able to listen to "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" since it was on the radio when I was driving home from college for my grandmother's funeral a few days before Christmas and my car broke down completely. I'm sure it's a lovely song to many, but there was nothing wonderful about that time of the year!

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Jackson 5 version of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", so I'd leave that out of the top 3. "Last Christmas" by Wham! is definitely worse. It has nothing to do with Christmas except that his chick happened to dump him the next day.

And why does everyone hate "Christmas Shoes" so much?

JesusThroughMary, lol.

Wham! is a glaring oversight, thank you for pointing it out. It should definitely make the top 5.

As for Christmas Shoes, like Wham, it has nothing to do with Christmas. It just happens that his mom is dying on Christmas, and it is the most depressing song ever, totally unrelated to the joy we are supposed to be experiencing while we await the birth of our Savior.

Oh my goodness, I was just listening to the radio tonight when Wham's song came on and I was like, "I love this one!" LOL. Bring on the Christmas 80's cheese. :) I'm such a sucker for it!!
