There's always next year...

In spite of my husband's best play off beard efforts, the Eagles did not deliver the NFC championship. It was an interesting experiment, being married to someone with facial hair, and I am glad that he will be shaving tonight, though I would have liked to see the all-Pennsy Super Bowl. This season I have embraced my family's devotion to the birds and come to appreciate the governor's post game comments, but I must confess that I will be glad to have Sunday afternoons back.

I'm re-watching the Phillies highlight video tonight to feel better about life. There is always next year...

Laces out....

(blink) (blink)

I took off all my Eagles gear, put on four different pieces of Phillies World Championship gear, watched 15 different YouTube videos of Brad Lidge (peace be upon him) striking out Eric Hinske, and I still want to put my head through a wall. Every time I try to get out, they suck me back in. They score 37 points against Dallas in week 2, and can't get 1 yard against Chicago. Then they lost to the Giants, and the season was over. They almost beat the Giants, and then tie the Bengals. Tie the Bengals? I didn't even know you could do that. Then the season was over. Donovan gets benched, and the season was really over. And then they score 100 points in 3 games. It's amazing! They control their own destiny. Then 3 against the Redskins, who had given up two weeks earlier. Now the season was REALLY over. Please, Tampa, put me out of my misery. No, let's lose to the RAIDERS instead and get our coach fired. Surely, the Bears can beat Houston. I want to go home and live in peace. No dice. I have to watch the Eagles dismantle the Cowboys and knock them out of the playoffs, all the while knowing that I would be tortured with at least three more weeks of false hopes and rationalizations. I knew they would beat Minnesota and I knew they would beat the Giants. I figured they would lose to the eventual Super Bowl champion Carolina Panthers, and that I would spend the week prior to that loss trying to convince myself that they would win. When Arizona beat the Panthers, I think I deep down knew that the Eagles had no shot to go to the Super Bowl, but I had to toe the party line and get sucked back in for one more week. They go down 24-6, and it's over, except that you keep saying that if they come out big in the second half, everything could change. Oh, wait, it actually did? 24-13. Then 24-20. What do you mean, they missed the extra point? Oh, no big deal, they just have to score again and go for 2. They do and do and miss. No big deal - Jim Johnson figured them out at halftime. No way they score again. Arizona had one yard in the second half - until the final drive. At least we stopped Tim Hightower at the 8 on 3rd and goal - and yet somehow it got called a touchdown. No big deal - just stop them going for 2. No big deal - just score a TD and go into OT. How can you drop that? He was wide open - where are you throwing it? 4th and 10 - no flag?!?!??! @^!&!!!!!!

OK, we can get the ball back. Maybe they can force a fumble. Maybe they can block the punt. Maybe they can pull what the Cardinals did and get somebody open deep. Maybe we'll see another Music City Miracle. CAN'T I HAVE FIVE SECONDS OF RESIGNATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO YOU HAVE TO STRETCH THIS GOD-AWFUL GAME OUT TO THE VERY LAST SECOND AND KEEP ME HOPING IN VAIN?!?!????

I hate this team. Nothing will change. "We were one play away from the Super Bowl. We just need to retool and tweak a couple things."

I want a new team. But to whom shall I go? There is an indelible mark on my soul. I could no more forsake them than Obama forsake the Rev. Wright. I thought this year was different. I always think this year is different. The Phillies, though, actually made this year different. October 29 was one of the ten best days of my life. This is not one of the ten worst, but I know that the Eagles won't be in this position again for a long time, and I just don't know why they can't just show up when it matters. This was the best possible scenario for the Eagles and the worst possible outcome. I have literally spent $10,000 and over a thousand hours on this team in the 10 years of the Reid-McNabb era, and I've gotten 10 days of this feeling or worse for my investment. The fact that a lot of years I'm one of the last fans in the NFL to get this feeling doesn't comfort me. I was at the 4th and 26 game, and I was at the loss the next week. Why waste my time? So I can buy another T-shirt? I've seen the Eagles score 56 points, and I've seen them lose 42-0 on Monday night football. You know we have to work the next day, right? You can't kick a field goal? It's Reggie White Night! Buddy Ryan is standing 30 feet away from me. Ask him for some defensive tips. If you're going to put Koy in, Randall is standing right there, and the guy in 121 is wearing a #12 jersey that looks like it'll fit. Jeff Garcia beats Dallas and Sheldon Brown buries Reggie Bush, and we can't stop Deuce McAllister with eight minutes left. You win 54 games in four years and none of them is the Super Bowl? Tommy Hutton drops a snap one year and Reno Mahe fumbles a punt the next. They go 12-1, and they can rest their starters if Atlanta loses on Saturday night in week 15. 2 minutes left, and Carolina's winning, then Michael Vick scores the game-tying TD with 97 seconds left, wins in overtime, the starters play in Dallas, and TO breaks his ankle (on a horse-collar tackle that was legal and caused the rule change, I might add). And Ronde Barber and Larry Fitzgerald and Deion Branch and Adam Vinatieri...

Laces out... add it to the list.

Maybe if I watch all of Game 5 (which I've never seen because I was trolling around outside Citizens Bank Park in 31 degree weather), I'll feel better. Or maybe I can get Flyered up and they can win a Cup. Maybe I'll get season tickets to the new MLS team next year. The Phantoms are leaving town, the Arena League is folding, I don't have a job after March 31, and capitalism ends in 36 hours.

But at least Andy took full responsibility for that loss and he's gonna do a better job at that next year.

Lol! Hysterical. Absolutely hysterical.

You poor soul. Don't worry, Andy Reid will do a better job of that next year ;-)

That was very funny -- and therapeutic.

But what do you mean by "laces out." Are you referring to the botched field goal attempt?

JesusThroughMary said...

Yes - the laces of the football were facing in on the missed extra point, and that causes the football to veer off in a random direction because you can't strike the football square.

It's also a reference to Ace Ventura.

GOD'S JUSTICE... WHAT DID YOU EXPECT??

This is what you get for beating Tampa Bay in baseball.

ANY QUESTIONS....?
