Profound Post for Fathers' Day
I just want to share an idea I will be debuting around our house this week.... the "refrigerator leftover tracker!" That's right, I am sick of finding small tupperwares of uneaten who-knows-what at the back of our fridge. I have devised a three column Excel spreadsheet that will now hang on the side of our refrigerator and help us keep tabs on what lurks inside. The columns are: Food Item/ Container Type/ Date Placed in Fridge. The rules are that every leftover container that goes onto a shelf must be logged, and then, if you eat it all you get to cross it off. This will be like a really easy to-do list type pat on the back for my swell leftover-loving husband or myself. That's all I've got from across the Atlantic this eve, folks. Have a blessed week.

Nice, AWOL. That's a great idea!! It transforms leftovers from a mystery, or a nuisance, into a whole instant snack/meal menu. I can see incorporating something like this into our weekly mealplan. Thanks for the suggestion.
By the way, there's lot of Excel spreadsheet talk on this blog lately. Hooray for Type A!
On a somewhat related note, I just cleaned my fridge (I mean really scrubbed it down, all the shelves, lots of soap) for the first time in about 2 years! I found what at one point were leftovers growing some freaky things. I think I'm nesting already as I've been cleaning all week and am now tackling my basement.
You are spreadsheeting your leftovers and I get accused of being Type A?!
Actually, I totally clean out my fridge once a week before I put away my groceries -- we buy 10 half gallons of milk and 3 of OJ a week, so we don't have room for old, lurking containers!
I do LOVE to cross things off lists, though, so this would be incentive to eat the leftovers for lunch!
Mary Alice, please explain your half gallon purchases. Do you have a money-saving secret to share? Is it a freshness thing? Storage related? Enlighten me!
I buy in half-gallons, too, but probably for diff. reasons since I think I recall that MA gets hers locally.
I think milk in the plastic gallon containers picks up other "flavors" from the fridge a lot more than the cardboard half-gallons. Maybe I'm just strangely sensitive, but I don't like the taste of milk in gallon containers.
Also, I would rather pay a little more to get half gallons at Costco than to make a separate trip to a grocery store to get full gallons (Costco's organic milk only comes in half-gallons). Plus, the half-gallon containers last longer, so I can buy 9 (3 3-packs) and it will last me for several weeks.
Probably way more info than you were looking for, B-Mama!
No secrets, our milk comes from a local, hormone free micro-dairy and that is how they sell it.
Enjoyed reading your blog tonight.....I love finding new blogs...Had a little time to blog hop tonight while waiting to go to the hospital and welcome a new grandson tomorrow. This month I am posting about our Disney trip, plus a great giveaway.
